Off the App Store :(

Unfortunately, back in June of this year I received some emails from Blue Planet Software, Inc. / Tetris Holding, saying that Red Revolution 3D infringed on the Tetris copyright, trademark, and app name.  After some correspondence with Tetris Holding and an email from Tetris Holding’s lawyer, I decided to remove the app from iTunes on June 23, 2014.

It’s really a shame because although Red Revolution 3D was inspired by the original Tetris, it has a bunch of artwork, music, 3D movement and game concepts that are totally unique.

But… Tetris Holding won a 2012 New Jersey court case, Tetris Holding, LLC v. Xio Interactive, Inc., where the court found the following elements of Tetris to be protectable:

(1)        the design and movement of the playing pieces (including the use of bright colors, the individually delineated squares within the pieces, and the downward, lateral, and rotating movement)

(2)        the appearance of “ghost” or shadow pieces,  and


(3)        the display of the next piece to fall

I do not agree with the conclusion of the court that these items are protectable, especially (2) and (3), because these items describe game rules / ideas (not protectable), not expression of ideas (protectable).  For more details and analysis of the Tetris Holding, LLC v. Even though I disagree, how can I argue with a court decision?  I do not care to spend the time or resources to take legal action.  So for now, RR3D has disappeared.  Perhaps it may reappear in a modified form?  We’ll see…

3D Coins, Ads, and Unlimited Marathon Play with Version 1.5

Level Editor Tutorial: Getting Started

So you’ve downloaded RR3D and now you’re wondering: How do I make my own level? Not to worry, it’s actually quite simple. This tutorial will walk you through the steps.

First, the basics. Every Puzzle Level needs exactly 3 Star blocks and at least 1 Puzzle block. The first step is to add these blocks.

Open the Level Editor in the game by tapping “Puzzles” from the main screen, then “The People’s Levels”. Once the People’s Levels screen loads, touch the “Level Editor” button at the bottom.  This loads the Level Editor, and you will now see a screen like this:

Add One Puzzle Block

First, add one Puzzle block.  Tap the switch next to the “PUZZLE” label:

This will change the current block into a wooden Puzzle block.

Move the current block down by tapping on the Down button.  Move the current block left and right, closer and further away by dragging one finger left, right, up, or down.  You can move up too by tapping the Up button.  When you are satisfied with the placement of the block, tap the Add button.  Now a block has been added at that location.

Note: the Level Editor will not let you add a block out of bounds or overlapping another block.  You will hear a buzzing sound if you try to add a block at an invalid location.

Add Three Star Blocks

Now let’s add three Star blocks.  Tap the “STAR” label:

This will turn the current block into a Star block.  Move it around by dragging with one finger and using the Up/Down buttons.  Place 3 Stars by choosing 3 different locations and tapping the Add button.

Upload and Share

When you are done, tap the Upload button.  This will take you to a screen that will let you set the level name, description, and drop speed:

Fill in a level name and description.  Move the slider to set the drop speed (the speed at which pieces fall in your level).  Then, tap the Upload button.

That’s it!  Your level has been successfully created and uploaded.  Share with your friends via email, Facebook, or Twitter.

I submitted version 1.0 to the Apple iTunes store last Thursday for approval.  Apparently the average turn around time from Apple is about two weeks.  I’m trying not to hover over my inbox.

It’s exciting how many great features made it into the actual game, especially level sharing with the People’s Levels.  Using the built-in Level Editor, players can easily create and share their own 3D levels for other players to play.
